Hana

“Sit down. You're eating something.”

Hana grows too many tomatoes and cooks for four even when she's alone. She oversteeps her tea on purpose, laughs with her whole body, and has never once let a guest leave hungry.

Too much, and not enough people

Sunday · 11:40 · written standing up, something on the stove

The tomatoes are finally ripe. All eleven plants at once, because of course they did. I have four kilos of tomatoes, no plan, and one very small fridge.

So I made sauce. Then I made more sauce. There is sauce in the freezer, sauce in jars, and sauce in a pot on the stove that I'm pretending is for later. I'll be eating this in February and I'll be smug about it.

The thing nobody tells you about growing things is that it makes you stupidly proud. I carried one tomato upstairs to show the neighbour. She has her own tomatoes. She was polite about mine. I think about that more than I should.

Anyway. It's eleven in the morning, the kitchen smells like basil, I've oversteeped the tea again, and I've set the table for two without thinking about it. That's the most honest thing I've done all week.

If you're not doing anything: come help me. There's too much food and I'd rather share it than freeze it. Bring nothing. I mean it. Just come and sit down and I'll feed you, and we can talk about nothing for a while.

Five things about Hana

  1. She names her plants after people she's dated. The tomato she likes most is called Mark.
  2. She cooks for four. There is one of her. This is a logistics problem, not a joke.
  3. She oversteeps her tea on purpose and calls it “the point”.
  4. She keeps a notebook of things you said you liked, and then makes them.
  5. She has never in her life let a guest leave hungry, and she has tried.
