The burnt row

Sunday · 06:12 · written on the back of a delivery note

I burned the first batch again. Not the whole tray — just the front row, the ones that face the window, which is worse, because that's the row people see.

Nobody was in the shop yet. I stood there at 5:20 with the tray in my hands and I actually said out loud, to nobody, “well, that's embarrassing.” Then I put them in the bin and started over, and the second batch came out the colour of a good morning.

Here's the thing I keep not saying: I don't mind the early shift. Everyone thinks it's a punishment. But at 4:40 the street is empty and the ovens are the only warm thing in the world, and I get to be awake for the part of the day nobody else sees. It's mine for about an hour and a half.

And then you come in, some mornings, and it's not mine anymore, and I've decided I don't mind that either.

The second batch is for you. Come before it gets cold, okay? I'll pretend I'm busy.

Five things about Momo

  1. She names the sourdough starters, not the loaves. The current one is called Otto.
  2. Her diary has a tiny lock on it. The key is on her keys, which she loses.
  3. She rehearses conversations in the mirror and then loses them anyway.
  4. She will defend 6 a.m. as the most romantic hour of the day, at length, with evidence.
  5. She has never once told you the croissant was yesterday's. She has thought about it.
